Visibility, credibility and strategic positioning helped Network General achieve its business goal – acquisition.

“After weathering a breakup with software maker McAfee Inc., the future was somewhat questionable for Network General. But recent strategic moves, including advancements to its flagship Sniffer products late last year, are positioning the San Jose, Calif.-based network management tool vendor to strike back with a vengeance. . .”
“Network General has many factors in its favor: sound finances, many committed customers, the highest revenues of its cohorts; and now a substantially refreshed product line. We look forward to the fireworks as the competing parties respond to Network General’s resurrection.”

“The company, which McAfee sold to investors last year for US$275 million after having acquired it in 1997 for US$1.3 billion, says the enhancements are just one example of efforts underway to return the company to its former glory.”

“Gibson stated that Network General is profitable and that its annual revenue is more than the total of all its competitors combined. The Sniffer brand, which first hit the market in 1986, is “powerful” and has grown in brand recognition to become the “Xerox of network management.”
