Designer Michael Wolff told attendees in a 99U interview that his career creating successful brands has been based on empathy for other human beings, asking not just who, what, and how, but asking why.  He asks clients why they do what they do, and the answers guide authentic brand designs.

 

 

 

Identifying the honest answers can even give the companies themselves a new insight into what they do.  In one example, he introduced one company he worked with to the idea that they were not just renovating trucks into small buses for Third World places.  They were providing transportation for areas struggling with great challenges.
