Social Media Marketing: Choose The Right Call-to-Action For Each Post

Choose The Right Call-to-Action For Each Social Media Post-1

When we talk about social media marketing, a lot is said about the importance of creating content that is “engaging.” We need to create content that our followers and others who see our content in their newsfeed will want to see AND interact with.

But just putting the content out there isn’t always enough to encourage the kind of interaction and engagement that generates results beyond views—and you probably want more from your social media than simply eyeballs on content.

You want:

  • Shares and comments that will put your content in front of even more people.

  • References and referrals to build new business.

  • Visits to your website.

  • And, ultimately, sales.

As most marketers know, getting prospects to take those kinds of actions usually requires explicit requests or directions. You have to actually tell people what it is you want them to do (politely, of course).

Those requests and directions are in the form of a call-to-action. From a website perspective, a call-to-action typically means a button or icon that a visitor can click to complete an action:

  • Sign Up Now!

  • Get Your Free Trial

  • JOIN TODAY!

On social media, it can mean the same thing (you can add specific call-to-action buttons to your Facebook page; see these instructions). But it can also mean the words you use to encourage the viewer to take another action.

This infographic from Kiera Stein has a great list of phrases you can incorporate into your social media posts to encourage viewers to take some action, whether that is to click through to visit your website for more information, share the post, or comment. While her last category is focused on the unique needs of non-profit organizations, businesses can use the same concepts in their posts as well, with phrasing encouraging prospects to buy, subscribe, or save money now.

Plan your social media posts accordingly, considering what the intended purpose is of each post in order to choose the right call-to-action wording. Our Social Media Scheduling Template can help you map out your strategy in advance, to provide a visual guide to ensure you are using each call-to-action in the right setting.
